SCROLL DOWN
A Navigation Officer trainee is referred to as a Deck Cadet and follows a 3-year training programme, which leads to initial certification as a Deck Officer of the Watch (OOW) by the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).
Deck Officers are responsible for the safe navigation of the vessel, as well as the operations and maintenance of deck and safety equipment.
Whilst at sea and also alongside in port, the Deck Officers maintain watchkeeping duties on the bridge. Their main tasks include the safe navigation and management of the vessel, including planning routes, executing ship passages, cargo management, ship stability, crew welfare and the maintenance of all deck equipment. You can see there is a lot more involved than purely navigation.
The ship’s Captain or Master has command of the vessel and holds responsibility for the safety of everyone onboard, as well as the protection of the cargo and the environment.
The Deck Cadet training route is the initial stage in an established career progression towards certification as a ship’s Captain (otherwise known as a Master), with excellent prospects and salaries for those with the right qualifications, abilities and experience.
As well as offering a career path to the rank of Captain, this training programme also provides opportunities for a range of potential career options ashore in due course.
