British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and the Corporation of Trinity House have just established a training partnership, whereby Officer Cadets supported under Trinity House’s Merchant Navy Scholarship Scheme (MNSS) will be provided with training berths aboard BAS’s new state-of-the-art research vessel, RSS Sir David Attenborough.
BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. Its highly-skilled science and support staff are based in Cambridge, Antarctica and the Arctic, working together to deliver research that uses the Polar Regions to advance our understanding of Earth as a sustainable planet.
BAS took delivery of the RSS Sir David Attenborough in November 2020 and the vessel departed the UK for its maiden voyage on 17th November 2021.
On behalf of Trinity House, Just Be Maritime Ltd (JBM) has now arranged for the first four cadets to join the vessel in May 2022 for a four-month training deployment. During their time aboard, the cadets will be undertaking a range of activities and tasks as part of completing their MNTB Training Record Books, including vessel familiarisation, maintenance work and watchkeeping duties.
Stuart Benge, Operations Director for Just Be Maritime, said, “This really is a unique opportunity for Trinity House’s cadets to gain seagoing experience aboard RSS Sir David Attenborough, especially when the vessel is operating in Polar Regions.”
