After achieving your initial Certificate of Competency (CoC) from the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA), you will return to sea to gain watchkeeping and operational experience, as well as the requisite sea service and watchkeeping time, before returning to college for higher levels of certification.
Deck Officers can ultimately progress to become a ship’s Captain (or Master), while Marine Engineer Officers will advance towards a Chief Engineer position and METOs towards a Chief Electro-Technical Officer rank.
To achieve professional certification for these senior positions normally takes about five years, with officers gaining higher-level qualifications, experience and competency along the way before finally being promoted to the highest rank.
